Making Tax Digital for Sole Traders

From 6 April 2026, HMRC mandates that sole traders and landlords whose total qualifying income (from self-employment and/or property) exceeds £50,000 must operate under Making Tax Digital for Income Tax (MTD ITSA).

From 6 April 2027, that threshold lowers to £30,000.

If you fall into those brackets, you’ll be required to:

  • Keep records digitally using HMRC-compatible software
  • Submit quarterly updates of income and expenditure
  • Send an End of Period Statement (EOPS) and Final Declaration through software
  • Continue to meet the usual Self Assessment deadlines for tax payments and final returns

Our MTD Digital Plan - from £69/month handles all that for you:

From £69 per month

  • Quarterly digital updates to HMRC
  • End-of-Period Statement (EOPS) and Final Declaration
  • Cloud-accounting setup (FreeAgent/Xero)
  • Support maintaining compliant digital records
  • Periodic tax reviews and a dedicated accountant for your journey

(Everything HMRC requires — done properly, with zero hassle.)

Tax Investigation & Compliance Protection

Even well-kept accounts can attract HMRC checks.

Our Tax Investigation & Compliance Protection service covers the professional fees of responding to an HMRC enquiry - so you never face unexpected costs during an audit or compliance review.

It includes:

  • Coverage for Self Assessment, VAT, PAYE/NIC and IR35 enquiries
  • Professional representation directly from DMP Accountants
  • Early intervention to limit HMRC escalation

Add it as part of your package or as a standalone annual service for peace of mind.

What Records Do Sole Traders Need to Keep?

We always advise to keep all records, relating to the business such as sales, income statements - online platforms tend to contain a record of these.

Your expenses alongside their respective invoices/receipts should be kept safe or uploaded digitally in correspondence with your transactions.

A bookkeeping platform assists with record-keeping.

Regular accounting support means you know what else including the above needs to be done by a qualified accountant.

Sole Trader vs Limited Company: When Should You Switch?

We are intending to, if not already create a blog post which discussed this in detail. However, in summary; its best to get an accountant to review your position.

In a free consultation, it may be that you're already on the optimal setup, unless we advise further.

There are some major benefits - although it's worth a conversation for you.

Our biggest advice, query as soon as possible! We've seen clients and inquiries made, which means clients who assumed they were ok, have overpaid in tax, underclaimed and had messy records trying to guess.

Fees especially on a monthly basis are easy on cash flow and means you can have a professional advising you every step of the way.
